What is Composite Rebar (FRP)?

One of the concerns of construction activists is the problem of rust and corrosion of rebar in the structure foundation. Therefore, industrial units began to produce composite rebars.

What is Composite Rebar (FRP)?
Steel sections are extremely low resistance to electricity, magnetic waves, corrosion and rust and cause serious damage to the structure. Therefore, to solve this problem, industrial units began to produce products called composite rebars (FRP).

In this article, we will explain the following:

What is FRP or Composite?
What is a composite rebar?
What are the types of composite rebars?
What are the advantages of composite rebar?
Where is the application of composite rebar?
What is FRP or Composite?
FRP stands for Fiber Reinforced Polymer. In other words, FRP refers to a composite material, which is composed of fiber or reinforcing fibers and matrix (containing material) or polymer resin.

Composite rebar
FRP composite rebar is a type of polymer fiber reinforced rebar, of which fibers and resins are the two main components, which today has found its place in the construction industry as a reinforcing member of concrete. This type of rebar is a suitable replacement for ordinary steel rebars that have a very high tensile strength, which can be used in the tensile section of concrete sections. Composite rebars such as steel rebars are produced in the form of ribs, this tread can have different and optimized depths and steps to create the highest possible strength in its use as reinforced concrete. FRP rebars also have a very high durability and resistance to corrosion, so they are used to strengthen and strengthen structures. This rebar has been widely used due to its good resistance to sulfates and chlorides, as well as its good resistance to corrosion and rust. Therefore, to reduce the cost of repairing offshore structures that are exposed to the corrosive environment of the sea and due to the gradual loss of concrete coating of steel rebars, the use of FRP rebars along with other existing coping methods has been relatively successful.

FRP rebar can also be used to design and build new buildings. Due to their properties, these products reduce the diameter and increase the distance of rebars in reinforced concrete members such as slabs, tunnels, foundations and.. Also, FRP rebar increases the damping created in the structure against vibrations caused by earthquakes or industrial equipment and will be the best option to increase the resistance of the structure against earthquakes or vibrations and to strengthen with FRP.

Types of FRP rebars:
FRP composite rebars consist of two parts of fibers and resin, depending on the type of resin which can be one of the types of polyester, epoxy, vanilla or PVC or the type of FRP polymer fiber which can be one of the types of carbon, glass fiber or optical fiber Or rest assured, there are three types of FRP composite rebars on the market:

GFRP (Glass fiber-Reinforced Polymer) composite rebar
Carbon fiber-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP)
Aramid Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (AFRP)
Of the above-mentioned rebars, fiberglass rebar or GFRP is the cheapest reinforcement.
